Abstract

This article has as its theme the perceptions about education of the Catholic newspaper O Apostolo in the 19th century. The goal is to understand the participation of this journal in the public sphere with regard to debates on education. Therefore, I try to situate it as to its ideological affiliation, to perceive the nuances of its editorial profile and its performance in the educational field. This exercise showed that the Catholic journal in question adopted a prescriptive perspective at the expense of the specialized pedagogical debate. O Apostolo essentially defended religious education using its authority in order to orientate families in the care of children's education. According to the newspaper, the reward would be the development of morally strong Brazilians and, consequently, a society free from evil.
