Abstract

This article is part of the ethnography integrated between the years 2018 - 2020, in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte, which aimed to: ethnograph the pilgrimage ritual and visit to the tomb of Father Cícero Romão Batista by a group of eight pilgrims in the state of Alagoas. Specifically, the current text deals with the identity of the pilgrim, which has in Alagoas, one of the greatest representations: historical, cultural, human and social. The role of the pilgrim stands out, the spontaneity and authenticity of the pilgrim culture in Juazeiro do Norte and the corporality of the pilgrim from Alagoas in its performance/ritual as being its most striking mark and characteristic. The article also reveals historical/cultural elements of popular Catholicism that are resistant and that are maintained even in the culture of the pilgrim of Alagoas.
