Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze of abolitionist conceptions addressed in the writing of Adolpho Bezerra de Menezes in the last decades of the 19th century. As a historical leader of Brazilian Spiritism, we intend to show his writing beyond the doctrinal aspect, denoting an emphasis on the abolitionist agendas of the period. Therefore, we analyzed the representations developed in the romantic booklet A Pérola Negra, in order to denote the interlocutions made with abolitionist intellectuals, as well as an exercise in rescuing their political agendas defended in imperial parliaments, prior to 1886.
