Abstract

The Anti-Protestantism can be understood as the institutional attack of Catholic agents against the reformed religions. The study of this practice reveals the dynamics of the religious field of a given society. Since the second half of the 19th century the North American missionary activities has started in brazilian territory. In the newspapers of the time can be find references to the works of different Protestant denominations in different locations. In contrast, the Catholic Church, which was also undergoing a process of institutional reorganization, began to devise ways to combat the advance of Protestantism, a strategy expanded after the installation of the Republic. This work aims to bring the preliminary reflections of a study with the intention of analyzing the clashes between Catholics and Protestants in the northern region of Brazil. These conflicts are understood as disputes for the religious space, marked by the mobilization and articulation with social groups.
