This article examines how institutional decisions made by religious leaderships affect the experiences and practices of believers in the context of international migration. It presents an empirical study of the Russian Orthodox community in São Paulo and their reaction to the decision of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) to resume canonical relations with the Patriarchate of Moscow after decades of separation. The data reveal that the attitudes of the members of the religious community towards this institutional change prioritize the preservation of collective memory related to the history of the diaspora and the community ties with the local parish. This article aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between identity, memory, and religion in the context of migration.
