Tenha uma boa morte: notas sobre a Irmandade da Boa Morte / Have a good death: notes on the Brotherhood of the Good Death

Resumo

Aproximadamente em meados do século XVIII, em Salvador, ocorreu a fundação da Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte que, ao longo de quase três séculos, vem preservando, ainda que reelaborados e reinterpretados, valores africanos, visto ser ela uma instituição que traz na sua égide traços característicos das vivências mortuárias ressignificadas no Brasil. Esta irmandade torna-se singular pela exclusividade do gênero feminino, pelo trato com a temática mortuária e, por fim, pela pertença ao Candomblé e ao Catolicismo, marcas fulcrais que a tornam única. Ademais, cria um espaço para a atuação política. Nesta perspectiva, o presente artigo objetiva discutir o sentido dos rituais mortuários brasileiros a partir das concepções de vida e de morte das integrantes da Boa Morte, a sua relação com o medo da morte e, por fim, busca compreender de que forma o trânsito religioso contribuiu para que o grupo mantivesse os traços identitários mais relevantes.

Abstract

The Brotherhood of Our Lady of Good Death was founded approximately in the middle of the eighteenth century, in the city of Salvador, Brazil. Over nearly three centuries, it has preserved, albeit reworked and reinterpreted, African values, as an institution that brings inside characteristic traits of resignified mortuary experiences in Brazil. This brotherhood becomes singular by the exclusive admittance of women, by dealing with mortuary issues and, finally, by belonging to Candomblé and Catholicism, core brands that make it unique. Moreover, it creates a space for female political engagement. In this sense, this article discusses the meaning of the Brazilian burial rites, out of the conceptions of life and death of the Good Death members, their relationship with the fear of death and, finally, seeks to understand how religious transit contributed for the group to keep their most relevant identity features.
